Six Things Mental Health Clinicians Should Know About Ketogenic Therapy- with Dr. Bret Scher
Ketogenic therapy has a wide range of applications, from type 2 diabetes to psychiatric conditions like major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Many non-communicable diseases can be traced to metabolic dysfunction, and medical keto is a powerful intervention that can repair metabolism and restore health.
As awareness of the therapeutic potential of a medical keto diet grows, more patients are increasingly interested in exploring this type of metabolic therapy. However many clinicians may not be familiar with the nuances of implementing a medical keto diet. This video aims to provide insight into

    I think an interesting video would be toward nurses. I"m a cardiac nurse and end up fighting with my residents who balk at the idea of a keto diet. Now I just go around the argument and give them 3 research studies during their rounds with the attending who typically makes them read them. Ive converted a few but the struggle is real. I see psy patients, seizure disorders, alzheimers, bariatric patients and after an inital check them for a "wanting to learn" eval I slowly share my story and see how they respond. Most dont have the interest in changing their diet. But those that do I slip them resources and tell them my name is "Frank" so I dont get fired.

    Here’s the deal; not everyone has the luxury of a “healthcare team” to tweak their diets for mental health benefits. Keto helps on every level. You DON’T need a medical practitioner to guide you through. Now if you’re on medications and want to wean off, help from a doc would be great, but don’t expect the person who thinks you need chemicals for your sanity to be a willing aid to this new plan of yours. Read, watch credible people on RUclips (PHD researchers are best if you don’t want to wait 15 years for your MD to finally adopt the research into their practice) and get to work changing your life.

    I am the total opposite of being a diet obssesive person. Being 49, I literally I did not even know about carbs, protein, which foods have what or what they mean to the body until a year ago. Simply because I am very healthy, lean, athletic, in a natural, genetic kind of way, so I focused in the things I didn´t have in life and really wanted to learn. My only health warning was that I had a slightly high blood sugar even while always eating good, natural food, so I decided to undesrtand diet a bit more, just out of curiosity. I gave up rice, bread, potatoes, and every direct source of sugar, apart from reducing the exaggerated fruit intake I was into. Just that. And this is just crazy. I could jump through the roof all day. It´s insane, like I am connected to an electric source. My empty stomach blood sugar decreased to levels below 90, while my agility, physical and mental, has increased a lot. My physique is that of a 20 year athlete. I am not bragging about it. It´s just the truth, and people should consider giving it a chance.

    Great points! It's so true about the diet assumptions. This is why doctors tell people that fat is bad for you, because they think everyone will load up on saturated fats, and won't be able to consume enough healthy fats, and in their defense it can be difficult if the client isn't educated on monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and their benefits to our cellular makeup. It's also possible that some of the doctors don't know themselves. Let's face it doctors don't know everything and are often very specialized.

    • @Studio51media
      @Studio51media День назад

      Look into “seed oils”… most are polyunsaturated… seed oils are not really dietary in nature. Mankind has not had anything like “corn oil” or soybean oil, etc. up until the last 100+ years… and since they have replaced natural saturated fats, all the hardcore metabolic, “diseases” have exploded! [ I won’t run off the list, I assume you know what diseases we are talking about here] olive oil is NOT a seed oil [and has been around a LONG time] it’s also “monounsaturated”… and MUCH better for you if you do not HEAT it! Where as, cooking [frying] with seed oils is arguably [long haul] toxic as hell. Sugar, [carbs] are NOT essential [to be EATEN] [glucose IS necessary… but the body prefers to make it, it’s self]. So he is absolutely correct on this point. “saturated fats” ARE where we are supposed to get the bulk of our energy. and are essential, along with proteins [and all the amino acids] again, essential. Almost none of these essential nutrients are created by our bodies and must be eaten to survive. A little common sense here… What has changed? What has stayed the same? Think about it… don’t just believe what you’ve been told your whole life, you may find what “they” told you wasn’t exactly true? You may find that greed and agendas fed you full blown lies!

    The body needs carbohydrates for longevity and long term health outcomes. You are promoting dangerous misinformation, we are talking about a well balanced diet over a life span to contribute to longevity. Can you have a reduction of carbohydrates or none at all and be on a ketogenic diet for a while, yes absolutely. But the health organizations and medical consensus is overwhelming that when you eliminate any macronutrient for the long term it’s not healthy. Nothing you’ve said or presented has any credibility or weight to oppose the well demonstrated scientific consensus.

    Lauren does lead a full life. I have been following her trip w hope. I have been four monthes on keto. I’d like to talk about my experience. As I would love to hear in these comments others their experience. This is a grand experiment for all of us. I have rapid cycling bipolar 1. Say four episodes a year. After a longish mania, I had been really struggling. It felt like I was drowning. Per usual, slow thinking, no motivation. Stuck in a painful hell. My husband saw an article on NPR, and I knew I had nothing to lose. Now I feel and think much much better. And also. This is very important:My diet experiment had diferent variables. And still there was amazing success. What was different. I really struggled with nausea and weakness. I couldn’t do my tasks, and could barely walk my dog. It was too much. I couldn’t take care of my spouse.m I had been doing the diet for about a month.So I went up to 100 grams. Officially out of ketosis, I guess. But then the real miracle really happened...I became very clear and energetic. Not up, seemingly normal. So leaving keto and upping carbs a bit so far has Made me a believer. What will happen next? Right now I’ll stick with 100 gram carbs. I last saw Lauren talk about leaving ketosis after tasting something sweet and immediately getting psychotic. This wasn’t my experience. Again, I hope we can hear each others experiences. Results may vary. That’s good to know I think. Like many, I can barely Y afford the keto diet. Still I do what I can. I checked nutritionist guided programs listed in Metabolic Mind. . I’d love to join one of these programs. The first one wanted 996$ for through help. Or six hundred for some help. I’ll check more nutritionists prices. In the meantime, I’m figuring it out as I go. So. I hope to hear others experiences, to see what works.

    I really love this channel. It gives me a lot of insight that I've been searching for. I've been on bipolar 2 since 2013. I used to be on a keto diet, but when I felt better, I moved to another town. I wasn't on a keto diet anymore, but still on medications. Moving to a new place really makes me realize that depression and anxiety happen almost often. Now, I've been on keto diet again for almost a month, I still have mood fluctuations, but I think I'm getting better.

    I will provide two reasons to eat carbohydrates if you have no special dietary needs: - it has high energy density and easily digestable, meaning you won't struggle to stay awake during your studies and after eating - you most likely grew up in a carbohydrate consuming community and were populated with the appropriate microbiome, which makes switching without the assiciated probiotic supplements a gamble if you get a pathogenic or uniform microbe as your new resident

    Ironically, humans have achieved rapid civilization since they started eating carbohydrates as a staple food. Carbohydrates can of course be bad for your health, but we can't deny that humans have achieved rapid civilization since they started eating carbohydrates as a staple food. This is definitely relevant. The important thing is to prevent a sudden rise in blood sugar. Not all carbohydrates are harmful to your body. You should stay away from refined processed carbohydrates.
